Review #20 - Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell

Rooftoppers is a book about a girl named Sophie who was the only found survivor from a shipwreck age one. She believes her mother is alive and the only record she has of her is a cello case. The book is set half in London and half of the rooftops of Paris.

The narrative was absolutely gorgeous with a lovely writing style. I really enjoyed the flow of the writing even though the writing was simplified because of the demographic of the book.

The pace varied a lot especially around dialogue so some bits moved slower than others. Some bits did have really good pacing but some felt like padding, which was a shame. The beginning was especially good pace wise.

The descriptions and all the parts in Paris were absolutely fantastic. They were very visual and I am not usually someone who visualises things when reading (and yes, this means I don't squirm in book to movie adaptations).

Rooftoppers has just won the Waterstones Children's Book Prize, and don't get me wrong, it's a four starrer) but it just doesn't beat the Bone Dragon (also nominated).

I would recommend it.
